WIKIPEDIA About Elisapie

"Elisapie Isaac (also known simply as Elisapie; syllabics: ᐃᓕᓴᐱ; born 1977) is a Canadian Inuk musician, broadcaster, documentary filmmaker, activist, and actress. She spent her childhood in Salluit, Nunavik, Quebec, and moved to Montreal in 1999 to pursue communication studies in order to become a journalist.

Biography
Born in Salluit, Quebec to an Inuk mother and a father from Newfoundland, she performed at age twelve with the Salluit band Sugluk, one of whose members was her uncle George Kakayuk. Isaac collaborated with instrumentalist Alain Auger in the musical project Taima (Inuktitut for "that's all" or "it is done" in the early 2000s. The band's sole album, Taima, won the Juno Award for Aboriginal Recording of the Year in 2005. In 2006, Isaac wrote lyrics for songs composed by Bruno Coulais for the film The White Planet.

In 2010, Isaac's first solo album, There Will Be Stars, was released by Pheromone Recordings. On the album, she sings in English, French, and Inuktitut. Her second solo album, Travelling Love, was released in October 2012 under the name Elisapie. During the Juno Awards, she was mistakenly nominated as Breakthrough Artist of the Year, before it was revealed that she had been a Juno winner in 2005; the nomination was rescinded and given to Shawn Hook instead. She garnered a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Original Song at the 2nd Canadian Screen Awards for her song "Far Away", which appeared in the film The Legend of Sarila. At the Juno Awards of 2019, her album The Ballad of the Runaway Girl was nominated for the Indigenous Music Album of the Year.[9] In July 2019, the album was shortlisted for the 2019 Polaris Music Prize.[10] This album again contained lyrics in English, French, and Inuktitut.

Isaac has an extensive background in media production as well. When asked about her work in this medium in relation to her music, she has stated "I really believe that communication and radio was really a place for me to express my inner creativity, and I love that medium. And it has helped me to be a little more aware, especially when I have to be doing interviews and have a larger vision of my work than just the artiste point of view".

In 2021, Isaac was announced to have landed her first onscreen acting role, in C.S. Roy's forthcoming augmented reality film, V F C. She also had a part in the television crime drama series Motel Paradis in 2022.

In 2023, she released the album Inuktitut, consisting of ten Inuktitut-language covers of classic pop and rock songs. She won the award for Contemporary Indigenous Artist of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2024, and Best Adult Alternative Album at the Juno Awards of 2025. The album was a shortlisted finalist for the 2024 Polaris Music Prize.

On June 13, 2024, Canada Post released a series of stamps titled "Indigenous Leaders". One of them is dedicated to Isaac, marking her cultural contributions.

Corey Harris is a guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and band leader who has carved out his own niche in blues. A powerful singer and accomplished guitarist, he has appeared at venues throughout the North America, Europe, Brazil, The Caribbean, East and West Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

He began his career as a New Orleans street singer, travelling throughout the southern U.S. In his early twenties he lived in Cameroon, West Africa for a year, which had a profound effect on his later work. He has recorded many old songs of the blues tradition while also creating an original vision of the blues by adding influences from reggae, soul, rock and West African music. His 1995 recording, Between Midnight and Day, is a tribute to the tradition of acoustic blues. Subsequent recordings, such as Greens From the Garden (1999), Mississippi to Mali (2003), and Daily Bread (2005) show Harris’ maturation from interpreter to songwriter. Some of his imaginative compositions are marked by a deliberate eclecticism; other works stay true to the traditional blues formula of compelling vocals and down-home guitar. With one foot in tradition and the other in contemporary experimentation, Harris is a truly unique voice in contemporary music.

He has performed, recorded, and toured with many of the top names in music such as BB King, Taj Mahal, Buddy Guy, R.L.Burnside, Ali Farka Toure, Dave Matthews Band, Tracy Chapman, Olu Dara, Wilco, and others. His additional recordings include Fish Ain’t Bitin’ (1996), Vu-Du Menz (with Henry Butler, 2000), Downhome Sophisticate (2002), Zion Crossroads (2007), blu black (2010), Fulton blues (2013), Live at New Orleans Jazz Fest (2016), Free Waterway (2018), Louisa County Blues (2019).

In 2003 Harris was a featured artist and narrator of the Martin Scorcese film, “Feel Like Going Home,” which traced the evolution of blues from West Africa to the southern U.S. In 2007, he was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship — commonly referred to as a “genius award” — from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The annual grant, which recognizes individuals from a wide range of disciplines who show creativity, originality and commitment to continued innovative work, described Harris as an artist who “forges an adventurous path marked by deliberate eclecticism.” That same year, he was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Bates College, in Lewiston, Maine.

He studied at the California Institute of the Arts, where he pursued both classical and jazz music, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (and master’s degree in jazz bass). Alessi’s versatility in different musical traditions has contributed to his unique sound, blending classical precision with avant-garde jazz.

Alessi relocated to New York City in 1991, and since then has collaborated with many prominent musicians, such as Steve Coleman, Ravi Coltrane, Jason Moran, Don Byron, Fred Hersch and Uri Caine. His own ensembles and recordings showcase his skill as both a bandleader and a composer, with 13 albums as a leader. This include Baida (2013), released on ECM Records, receiving widespread acclaim for its complex, lyrical compositions and improvisations. Baida was shortlisted by several publications as one of the best jazz albums of the year. His latest ECM release in 2024 was It’s Always Now which writer Jim Macnie proclaimed as having a “poignant lyricism.” In 2025, he will record and release his 5th album on ECM records featuring Matt Mitchell, John Hebert, Ches Smith and his brother Joe, appearing together on record for the first time.

In addition to his performance career, Alessi is also a committed educator. "With the zen-funk quartet RONIN founded in 2001, Nik Baertsch proceeds with the work on his RITUAL GROOVE MUSIC together with Kaspar Rast (drums), Jeremias Keller (Bass) and Sha (reeds). Their music consistently follows the same aesthetic vision under various instrumental guises: creating the maximum effect by minimal means.

Despite the multiplicity of the band’s influences, Ronin’s music always possesses a strong individuality. They incorporate elements of disparate musical worlds, be they funk, new classical music or sounds from Japanese ritual music.

However, these forms are never merely juxtaposed in a post-modernist fashion but instead amalgamated into a coherent new style. Ultimately, these sounds and rhythms are highly idiosyncratic. The music consists of very few phrases and motives, continually combined and layered in new ways. Ronin thus creates a consistent aesthetic across all levels of musical expression. Composition, phrasing, sound structure, performance, and musical form all combine to form a system of interrelated elements. (Michel Mettler)

April 12, 2026

"The monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery - on tour with the endorsement of His Holiness the Dalai Lama - perform ancient music for world healing. These extraordinary performances bring Tibet's ancient ritual to life - a window into one of the world's oldest and most profound spiritual traditions transcending borders, cultures, and time.
For Sacred Music, Sacred Chants for Peace & Healing (DAY ONE), experience the Monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery monks as they share sacred practices passed down over millennia that heal the heart and stir the soul with extraordinary meditative multiphonic chants, beating drums, and booming dungchen horns. The performance comprises pieces believed to generate energies conducive to world healing. Robed in magnificent costumes and playing traditional Tibetan instruments, the Loseling monks perform ancient temple music for world healing.
Ancient societies throughout the world conceived that ritual performance of sacred music and dance at auspicious times establishes communication with the higher powers of good and brings about healing on environmental, social and personal levels. In Tibet, whenever a monastery celebrated a spiritual festival, people from surrounding villages and nomadic tribes would assemble in the monastery’s courtyard for the three or four days of sacred music and dance.
The Drepung Loseling monks are particularly renowned for their multiphonic chanting, known as zokkay (complete chord). Each of the main chantmasters simultaneously intones three notes, thus each individually creating a complete chord. Acclaimed author Dr. Huston Smith, who so wonderfully documented this Tibetan phenomenon in his film The Mystic’s Journey: Requiem for a Faith, referred to multiphonic chanting as “lifting the human spirit to the level of the gods.” Internet

"The trio of bassist Ben Allison, guitarist Steve Cardenas and saxophonist Ted Nash — collectively known as Allison, Cardenas & Nash — returns with a striking new recording, Triological, out April 10 on Sunnyside Records. Following their previous four albums that focused on music by iconic composers, Triological is the first to feature original music written by Allison, Cardenas and Nash specifically for the album. It features ten compositions, six of which can be heard here for the first time. Recorded over the span of two days by Matt Balitsaris at Maggie’s Farm, and mixed and mastered by Ben, Triological is the group’s most personal album to date.

Over the past decade plus, Allison, Cardenas & Nash have developed a unique group sound and approach — one based on improvisation, mutual trust, and an almost uncanny ability to predict each other’s musical moves. The result is music that flows freely but is also cohesive, while leaving room for each player to express their individuality.

The trio is loosely modelled after the drummerless units of saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre, who envisioned an approach to collective improvisation where each member was “the drummer.” * Internet

April 19, 2026

In the words of Joel Harrison, "the guitar can do anything—howl, whisper, swing, groove. It can explore extra terrestrial textures, play gorgeous harmony and quiet counterpoint, or cause acid lunatics to dance naked in a field." And thus his new project, The Guitar Choir, where four expert players Joel Harrison, Steve Cardenas, Gregg Belisle-Chi, Max Light - from different backgrounds merge to explore the guitar's infinite universe of sound.

The orchestral concept is not so much about soloists and accompaniment, rather a group mind where the collective is prized and beauty emerges from surprise and empathy. The idea has grown from Harrison's work at the yearly Alternative Guitar Summit Camp where master players often group together by chance with spectacular results. The repertoire includes Harrison's compositions as well as tunes from anywhere.

Steve Cardenas is best known for his work with Charlie Haden, Steve Swallow, and Paul Motian. Max Light is considered one of the leading younger improvisers with influences from modern bop to Allan Holdsworth. He placed 2nd in the 2019 Herbie Hancock Guitar Competition. Gregg Belisle-Chi gained notoriety for releasing an astonishing solo record of avant saxophonist Tim Berne's improvisations. He leads his own quartet exploring the outer reaches of jazz and rock and much else. Guitarist, composer, arranger, lyricist, writer, educator, and vocalist Joel Harrison has “created a new blueprint for jazz” (New Orleans Times-Picayune). Succinctly described by the New York Times as “protean… brilliant,” he is the founder and director of the Alternative Guitar Summit, a yearly festival and camp devoted to new and unusual guitar music.

WITH

Ben Allison, Steve Cardenas, Ted Nash create music that is intimate and highly conversational — a ‘musical trialogue,’ where group interplay is the focus. Together, they weave conversations that are full of subtlety and surprise. The trio takes a collaborative approach to arranging, each bringing their own voice to the table.

Singer and guitarist Serge Massama Dogo, aka Dogo du Togo plays Togolese music and ritual mixing alagaa trance music with African pop creating a distinct sound.

Dogo draws from a deep well of sounds from across Togo, including bobobo, kamou, and kpanlogo rhythms, melodies, and scales drawn from Vodun religious rituals and others.

But the bedrock of his band’s sound is the driving alagaa rhythm, a dizzying dance between snare drum and rhythm guitar, modeled on gankogui kinka bells.

Alagaa means “trance” in the Ewe language, and its driving, irresistible beat is transporting.

“When you listen to this music, if you don’t get in a trance, then something’s wrong with you!” Dogo explains. “The alagaa beat brings the energy right away. As soon as you bring it in, it just feels different; it takes you somewhere else.”

For Camp Saint Helene, the concept of otherworldliness is neither strange nor complex, but alluring and holy. Created by Elizabeth Celeste Ibarra, Dylan Nowik, Wesley Harper and Alex Wernquest, they approach their craft akin to a ritual, leaning into the notion that art and expression are sacred experiences on an overstimulated planet. Often informed by the spirit of a defunct Christian-summer camp turned arts-colony deep within the mountains of New York, their music searches for shimmers of hope amidst hints of doom.

In 2024, they were featured on a compilation record, Cosmic Waves Volume 1., released by Angel Olsen via somethingscosmic / Jagjaguwar. This compilation included their single, “Wonder Now“ as well as their song, “Farfisa Song” , covered by Angel Olsen.

Their sophomore record, Of Earth and its Timely Delights, was released on a record label they founded called Misery Mother , in 2024. The album measures the distance between grief and possibility. It is a meditation on earth-time in relation to the cosmic, the lyrics a commentary on big-picture themes such as personal and collective revolution, dystopias, greed, love and human connection. With an urgency that is both thoughtful and experimental, the sound of Camp Saint Helene is a collaborative endeavor; a sonic enmeshing of each member’s individual character. Of Earth and its Timely Delights is a journey with no destination; a constant rediscovery of self, amidst shifting fields of perception
In 2023, they were commissioned by NADA x Foreland to present a live performance and installation piece titled “Into the Garden” for Upstate Art Weekend in Catskill, NY.

“Farfisa Song”, off their debut record Mother (2019), was named KEXP’s Song of the Day and added to KEXP Music that Matters Vol. 683 by Cheryl Waters. She describes Camp Saint Helene as “..call[ing] to mind the '60s California folk scene with their gentle, waltz-like pastoral sound”. Additionally, “Farfisa Song” was featured predominantly both in the teen horror drama, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” (2022) and Zoe Lister-Jones’ series SLIP (2023). Mother was named by Bandcamp as a New and Notable record of 2019, describing it as “Occult-folk in the 70’s U.K. tradition that further affirms the link between Appalachian and British folk songs”.

Both Mother & Of Earth and its Timely Delights were recorded at Basement Floods Records in Catskill, NY.

An offshoot of the acclaimed indie-salsa band Bio Ritmo, Miramar was one of the first Latin bands to perform on NPR’s Tiny Desk and has since introduced its unique take on bolero to audiences worldwide, releasing music on two of Brooklyn’s most iconic independent labels: Barbès and Daptone Records. Their latest album, Entre Tus Flores, released on the historic tropical label Ansonia Records, was hailed by Staf Magazine (Spain) as “one of the greatest discoveries of recent years,” and praised by Lira Magazine (Sweden) as “crazy, updated, odd – and irresistible.”

Miramar’s undeniable magic lies in the chemistry between vocalist-songwriter Rei Álvarez and the “gran voz de la diva,” Laura Ann Singh. Their “heartbreaking vocals suck in every nerve” (Lira), and they “harmonize with such precision and grace that it’s hard to imagine a day when they didn’t sing together” (Style Weekly). The Álvarez–Singh duo is supported by a lush, dreamlike soundscape arranged by bandleader Marlysse Simmons-Argandoña, who alternates between piano and combo organs. As a full band, Miramar also includes Gary Kalar on electric guitar, Giustino Riccio on percussion, Dan Martinez on bass and occasional collaborates with string quartets and symphony orchestras. "We are dedicated to the traditions of Balinese performing arts and committed to exploring new music, New York City’s Gamelan Dharma Swara is carving out a compelling niche.
Founded in 1989, Dharma Swara is one of the leading Balinese gamelan and dance groups in the United States and has performed at renownded NYC music venues including (le) Poisson Rouge, Symphony Space, Joe’s Pub, Roulette, and BAM, as well as cultural institutions such as MoMA and Asia Society. The group toured Bali in 2010 with an invitation to perform in the Bali Arts Festival’s popular Battle of the Bands, and most recently, a stunning performance at Basilica Soundscape in Hudson, New York.
While traditional repertoire is an honored part of Dharma Swara’s vision, they also value the exploration of new music for gamelan. This includes recent compostions, such as Joel Mellin’s Synesthesia, Andrew McGraw’s Sikut Sanga, Nerissa Campbell’sLegian 1983 (Breathe My War), and Putu Saptanyana’s Lingga Tangan. The group has also performed works by leading Balinese composers, including Made Subandi’s Kupu-Kupu Kuning and Dewa Ketut Alit’s Cecanangan and Geregel. Dharma Swara is also currently commissioning new works for gamelan.
The intricate patterns of Balinese music and dance are learned through traditional aural methods with an incredible amount of dedication over long periods of rehearsal. Most members of Dharma Swara have been with the group for many years. A large number of them have also studied or lived in Bali, bringing back their knowledge to share and enhance the group. Dharma Swara plays with spirit, dedication, and gratitude on gamelan semara dana instruments. The gamelan semara dana was invented by Balinese musician, composer, and master gamelan smith I Wayan Beratha in 1987. The ensemble combines the popular 20th century gong kebyar tuning (selisir, a 5-tone scale) with the older 7-tone semar pagulingan (16th or 17th c. CE), making it possible to play a wide range of traditional and new repertoire.
Dharma Swara has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, and the Asian American Arts Alliance, among others." GDS Website

The music features reinterpretations of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man," Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child," and Fela Kuti's "Water No Get Enemy," as well as original compositions that explore the New Orleans sound from Alune's musical perspective. One standout track, "From Congo to Square," featuring iconic artists, narrates the journey of brass band music from its origins in West Africa to its evolution under oppression and violence, symbolizing the enduring impact of African musical heritage." * Internet

"A world premiere! An evening with Ethan Iverson's Benny Goodman Sextet, Playfair Sonata with Carol McGonnell and the Orange Road Quartet and Music of Innocence and Experience by Bobby Ge.
Noted jazz pianist and polymath Ethan Iverson (best known for his founding role in The Bad Plus) is now writing formal scores for classical players. Tonight he brings clarinet star Carol McGonnell and up-and-coming string quartet Orange Road to Saugerties for the world premiere of The Benny Goodman Sextet, a serious yet fun chamber work that draws on Benny Goodman and both classical and jazz influences. McGonnell and Iverson will also duo on Iverson’s Clarinet Sonata, one of six acclaimed Playfair Sonatas released last year.
Carol McGonnell has been hailed as “an extraordinary clarinetist” by the NYTimes, “elastic, exacting, stupendous” by the LA Times and “clarinet genius” by Time Out NY.
In 2002 Ethan Iverson helped form The Bad Plus, a revolutionary and wildly successful avant-garde trio that The New York Times said was “Better than anyone at melding the sensibilities of post-60’s jazz and indie rock.”
Since leaving TBP, Iverson has released critically-acclaimed jazz albums on ECM and Blue Note, often accompanied by bona fide jazz stars such as Tom Harrell or Jack DeJohnette. Downbeat has called Iverson “A master of melody” while Hot House recently raved, "Known for his intellectual depth and adventurous musical spirit, Ethan Iverson has traversed the boundaries of jazz tradition while leaving an indelible mark on its evolution.”
After witnessing a 2024 concert of standards spontaneously chosen by the audience, Stereophile wrote, “Iverson is a natural, consistent crowd-pleaser. For his entire career, he has been finding ways to be accessible while pushing the envelope.” Iverson also has a long-standing relationship with the great modern dance choreographer Mark Morris and still holds down the piano chair in drum legend Billy Hart’s long-running quartet. On top of his activities as a pianist and composer, Iverson has an active career as a writer, publishing significant criticism in The Nation, JazzTimes, The New York Times, and the Culture Desk of The New Yorker, in addition to posting frequently on his Substack, Transitional Technology." Officially Sanctioned Fakelore aka Band Bio:
In the early 19th Century, before the transformation of Israel, the deterioration of the old traditions of Yiddish and East European Jews, and the migration to the new worlds in search of new beginnings, there was a notorious band known as "Di Shikere Kapelye"- " The Inebriated Orchestra" (Also known as the "Band of Drunks"). A goup of musicians that gave birth to the soul of Klezmer and gave Klezmorim their imperishable bad reputation. There is very little information that is solid fact behind this story, however the few facts we do know come from either oral accounts that were passed down through friends and families of perhaps, the original band members, and from court records of irate clients and rigid governments who pressed charges against the wild band. They were often asked to perform but never invited to stay, perhaps due to the spontaneous musical collaborations in the main plazas of various towns after all the bars and pubs had closed. As the group became known more for their rebellious behaviors rather then their musical talents, many members separated from the original band and formed new bands that mixed dizzy sounds and undefined dances. Their far-reaching repertoire became a strong influence for the future of klezmorin.
The original styles of klezmorim, have failed to surface until a number of extraordinary brass musicians were brought together by Frank London. The group of musicians met in "New York City's Knitting Factory" bar to combine their knowledge, history and talents and create magical sounds together. They threw back several cocktails in memory of the old traditions and uncovered secrets and tales of the incredible lost sounds, creating "Frank London's Klezmer Brass Allstars"." JL Website.

"NPR says: “This is life-affirming music with curious twists and turns, expertly performed” - @nprmusic
Jazz luminaries Miguel Zenón and Luis Perdomo present sublime interpretations of the Latin American songbook, drawing from their celebrated albums, El Arte del Bolero Volumes 1 and 2…the latter earned the pair a Grammy in 2024.
The heartfelt accord between the two reveal canonical knowledge and interpretive prowess, as well as the glimmering qualities of their individual musicianship.
Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Miguel Zenón is widely considered one of the most groundbreaking and influential saxophonists and composers of his generation who masterfully balances innovation and tradition. @miguelzenonmusic has also developed a unique voice as a conceptualist, concentrating his efforts on perfecting a fine mix between jazz and his many musical influences.
Perdomo, who came to New York in 1993 from Venezuela, is one of today’s most in-demand sidemen working with a wide array of jazz and Latin stars – from Ravi Coltrane to Ray Barretto, and by his six critically- acclaimed recordings as a leader. "@luisperdomojazz

"Brothers Zohar & Adam Cabo are fast becoming one of the most talked about new acts in jazz. With Zohar on keyboards and Adam on drums, these rising young stars bring a lifetime of musical experiences and influences to bear on their eclectic, genre-bending duo performances. Born to musician parents Richard Cabo (former Latin big band leader) and Dassi Rosenkrantz (bassist, record producer, and educator) the two brothers, together with their sister Noga were veteran performers before they reached their teens, even recording an album as a family band at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis." "Born in New York and raised in Tamil Nadu, ganavya, whose name means “one who was born to spread music,” grew up immersed in a culture of community and devotional practice. Her last album, Daughter of a Temple, featured 30 collaborators, including Esperanza Spalding and Vijay Iyer. It was named one of the Top 10 Global Albums of 2024 by The Guardian, who also called her “one to watch” with a voice that could “turn stoics into sobbing wrecks.
Through improvisation, storytelling, and sacred sound, ganavya’s music offers a space of deep listening, healing, and belonging. We invite you to enter her world for an evening of profound artistry and spiritual connection."

"A visionary intuitive artist who writes the music she performs. "I get inspired by the world I am living in.
I use my emotions to write. Going into the feeling is transformed in sound and sentiment. Having emotions is the universe giving you messages. Melody is the thought sentiment and the harmony creates the sound of the emotion. When I sing, I sing from many layers of my experience and emotional intelligence that relates, transforms the singing sound vibration that is part of the quantum field of healing and regeneration."KK Website
